I ended up in Cologne by coincidence. Three years ago, I received a birthday gift: a ticket to Elton John's concert in this wonderful city. At that time, I was still in my home country. Then COVID came, and the concert was postponed for another three years. It was quite a long wait to see my idol.
The big day finally arrived, and everything was planned to the last detail. You know that time is precious to me. I arrived in Cologne at 11 am and the journey from the airport to the hotel took me 15 minutes by train. Germans are punctual, and their infrastructure is impressive. I booked a hotel right in front of the LANXESS Arena where the concert is taking place. Usually, when I travel alone, I choose accommodation close to tourist attractions or what I have planned. The hotel is lovely and cozy, with professional staff who informed me about the events happening in Cologne this weekend. So, I set off to explore the city for a few hours, and of course, I stumbled upon a wine festival. But it was a special one, featuring local wines that caught my attention. Studies show that German wines are among the best in Europe. So, I tasted their wines... about three types. The first was a Pinot Noir ''SR'' Dernauer Goldkaul from O.Schell, it felt like a mix of young fruits but also the intensity of oakiness, by the way, thank you for the personalized glass, I will keep it as a memory. The second wine was at another winery, Weisswein Franz Nippgen, a Riesling Spatlese, Neuleininger Sonnenberg from 2022, a young wine with notes of lime, grapefruit...a hint of yeast. and the last one from the Mosel area, Tom Benz, Major Tom Rose, fruity as well, perfect for summer days. This tasting gave me homework for the study of grape varieties in this country. I did not expect to be fascinated by their wines, but it once again proves that my taste buds are evolving, which makes me happy. The people here are very friendly, happy, healthy, and respectful. What caught my attention, especially, is that even the elderly (those over 60) engage in a lot of physical activity and value their health. The ladies dress very chic, and the gentlemen are quite fit. But going back to the wine festival, Germans love their beer, but they also appreciate wine. I took some brochures from the wine producers, so I have material to work on for an article dedicated solely to German wines.
I return to the hotel to get ready for the main reason I am here: Elton John's concert! I cannot explain in words what I feel, but I believe those who have similar experiences understand. I cross the street to the arena and encounter an organization that I have not seen before. Usually, there are endless queues that raise your adrenaline... but not here. Everyone is chill, knowing how to enjoy everything. In just 30 minutes, the hall fills with happy and enthusiastic people eager to see their idol. Elton does not keep us waiting and enters the stage at the announced time, in his impeccable fancy attire, with a smile on his face and full of gratitude for being able to perform for the fifth time in Cologne. The hall is in ecstasy... you can see the appreciation on people's faces for such a music icon. Elton has always known how to reinvent himself and adapt to the new generation, collaborating with young artists, and thus enjoying a mixed audience. He sings tirelessly (except for the moments when he changes outfits), playing the piano and singing as if he were 20 years old. Here, he surpasses many artists, considering he is 76 years old. He is classic, being thankful for the audience after each song... he even recognizes his fans who accompany him to every concert. The light show and the tribute to many stars make the spectators jump with joy and express their appreciation. Then comes the moment when he sings my favorite song named - YOUR SONG - tears of joy well up in my eyes, confirming that the joy of simple things makes us happy and fulfilled. Thank you, Elton... the highlight of the year.
I arrive at the hotel, share the experience with friends, and throw myself onto the bed.
The next day, I explore the city on foot, wanting to experience the daily activities of the locals. I choose a local café, where the locals enjoy sitting and chatting. Everyone greets each other and wishes them a productive day. I notice that Germans love pastries; most cafes are filled with such delights. I could not resist the temptation.
I arrive at the famous romantic bridge filled with wishes, love, and broken hearts, all locked in padlocks. I wander through the local markets and shops, taking a stroll along the Rhine River, where a few cruise ships are docked. Elderly people happily explore a new city, while others on the ship's deck play golf or savor a local drink.
I head to the Chocolate Museum to learn about the production steps of Lindt chocolate. A group of excited children runs towards the area where a robot offers chocolate pieces to the eager ones. Of course, I patiently wait my turn 😊. The history of chocolate is fascinating, and it has always been a luxury dessert. However, it was more appreciated in the past... and for hot chocolate, there used to be a whole ritual... imagine something similar to an English tea ceremony. The weather is on my side, and I retreat to a cozy terrace near Cologne Cathedral, where I enjoy a local wine and share impressions with 'you' (thank you for being patient and willing to accompany me on this escapade and you made me not feel alone. In fact, I think you would have liked to take the city for a walk). It is getting late, and my sister Dana wants me back in the hotel room, safe 😊. The last morning in Cologne finds me at the same café, observing the locals and writing impressions for my blog. I head to the Schnuetgen Museum - Art of the Middle Ages. Additionally, I happened to come across an International Photography Festival, which was unusual for me. The photographs were compiled into books that did not require much description... From the stories of immigrants to the culinary recipes of grandparents who are no longer alive. I admit I had patience, and this exhibition touched me a bit.
Having passed the first part of the day, I retreat to a riverside restaurant... I have another cup of coffee, lunch accompanied by a glass of Riesling, laptop in my arms... and I start writing... I linger there for about two hours... then I head back to the hotel to retrieve my luggage. But in front of me stands proudly a building of approximately thirty floors that doesn't go unnoticed by me... it was The perfect view of Cologne. Taking advantage of my student ID, I purchase a ticket. The 360-degree view takes my breath away, I enjoy it for a few minutes, gather my thoughts, and then continue my way towards the airport.
Cologne remains in my thoughts, my heart with Elton... but my soul is healed and filled with gratitude, as I have loved ones close to me who made my stay in Cologne unforgettable.
